CONDOLENCES

To the family of Knight Gail T. Corbin, Mesa, Arizona.  Brother Gail passed away April 9, 2011, at age 90.  He had recently moved to Arizona from Connersville, Indiana.  He was a 52 year member of Crescens Lodge #33.

To the family of Knight William D. Goodwin, New Castle, a member of Crescens Lodge #33.

Brother Goodwin passed away at age 71 on January 13, 2012.

*****************

Have you signed a candidate for the Rathbone Celebration?   We can best honor our founder, Justus H. Rathbone, by initiating more members into the Knights of Pythias.  Brother Rathbone founded an Order with the high ideals of Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence, and he authored a beautiful Ritual to impart those ideals to future generations.   All his efforts, and the work of countless other Brothers who followed, will be worthless if we let the Order dwindle away to NOTHING.

*****************

Several members of Crescens Lodge #33 recently visited the home of a disabled Brother to present him a 50 year pin and diploma.  It was a very rewarding and pleasant evening for everyone, and well worth the effort to travel a few miles on a cold night.  There are probably several other members throughout Indiana who would welcome a visit from some of their Lodge Brothers.

FROM THE GRAND CHANCELLOR

Stephanie and I would like to thank all the Brothers and Sisters that participated in the toy drive for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.  It was a great experience to see the faces of all the kids and parents.  Not to mention to look back and recall our stay at St. Vincent just five years ago when we were down there with Jaxson.  We were able to provide presents to all the kids with toys, all the parents received gift cards, and presents to the siblings that were there.  Thanks again from the whole Breedlove/McKee family.

Steven Breedlove, Grand Chancellor

SUPREME LODGE POSTER CONTEST

Photos of the top three winning posters can be viewed at http://pythianinternational.com/specials/Contest.htm.

Jesse Edwards, a Junior at Winchester Community High School, and the representative of Crescens Lodge #33 and the Grand Domain of Indiana, captured the Supreme Lodge Poster Contest first place title! Jesse placed 6th in the contest last year and his poster about "bullying" must have caught the eye of the judges as it won first place money of $1,000 for Jesse. Crescens Lodge #33 staged a dinner on Tuesday, September 27th with a nice crowd on hand to attend this grand celebration! New Castle Mayor James Small proclaimed the day "Jesse Edwards Day" and issued a proclamation to be read. Supreme Prelate and National Poster Chairman Keith Stooksberry and his wife PSC Sheila were present representing the Supreme Lodge. Following his comments, Indiana State Director of Youth Activity PGC David Hensel was called forward to make the $1,000 presentation to Jesse. MC/SR Dennis Adams also presented Jesse a plaque from Crescens Lodge for his championship. Dale Hardacre, Art instructor at Winchester Community High School, was called forward and surprised with not only a plaque of appreciation from Crescens Lodge but was also given the Supreme Lodge Medal of Honor for his contributions to the poster contest. Hardacre is believed to be the only 6 time winning instructor in the history of the contest. Jesse and Dale were supported by having the principal, assistant principal, band director, and choir director in attendance from the school. Grand Vice Chancellor Michael Deaton led a contingent of Grand Lodge officers including Grand Prelate Richard Neal, Grand Secretary Ralph Willis and Grand Outer Guard Jerry Weilenman. Also present were PGC's Larry Bartley; LaRue Cross (GT); and Richard Messer; SR Maridene Adams, and GT Beverly Deaton. There were 33 in attendance. It was a marvelous evening! Contributed by SR Dennis Adams

The theme for the Poster Contest for 2012 is same as this year – "Don't Be A Bully, Be A Friend". Prize amounts are the same as in 2011. The deadline for submission to local Lodges is April 6, 2012. Supreme Lodge Membership Poster and Business Card

Supreme Chancellor Edwin Wright has sent communication to all Grand Lodges regarding the efforts to gain new members. He states: "The time has come for the Knights of Pythias to be recognized and known for the outstanding work that we do". The Supreme Council has announced a new membership initiative that will give recognition to the Knights of Pythias and assist in obtaining new members. They have designed a new poster and a membership business card. Both contain many of the programs and activities that are of interest to prospective members. The poster emphasizes that the K of P has raised and donated more than $200 million to help needy people, to fund medical research, and for charitable and community causes as well as supporting our troops. The posters and cards are now available from the Supreme Secretary, and they can be customized for any local or grand lodge. Also planned is a universal membership week, called PR (Pythian Recruitment) Week, for the purpose of focusing all our efforts on gaining new members.

From the Grand Chancellor

Thank you to everyone who attended this year's convention.  It was one of the best we have had in a long while.  I hope to hear from everyone about upcoming events during my year, and I hope to be able to make as much as God wills. This year's project is a joint project.  We have chosen Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent's.  One of our fund-raising projects will be a toy drive.  My motto: What Kind of Footprint Will You Leave?   Would also thank the state of Indiana for helping us make history in so many ways.  My sister and I are the first brother sister duo in national history of this order.  Stephanie is the youngest Grand Chief in the history of Indiana, and I am the youngest GC nationally.  We are also fourth generation grand officers, and fifth generation Pythians.  Here's to a great year!

Fraternally,

GC Steven D. Breedlove

CRESCENS #33 FAMILY PICNIC/VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

The annual picnic and swim party for Crescens Lodge #33 was held at the home of Denny and Maridene Adams on Tuesday, July 19th.  Even though the weather was hot and sultry, the crowd came and stayed for nearly five hours before it disbursed.  Conversation, great food and swimming were just part of the evening.  The highlight was the seventh annual Volunteer of the Year Awards.  PGC Thomas E. Alexander was named the 7th Volunteer of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the lodge and the Order.  PGC Maridene Adams was named the Sister's Volunteer of the Year for all of her hard work to the lodge for running the fireworks stand for the first 25 years and the hundreds of meals she has helped cook.  Plus her dedication to her Temple, where she has served as Secretary for 33 years.  She still continues to serve the Grand Temple in several capacities.  PGC Ed Neal was surprised by the committee and was named Volunteer of the Decade for all of his dedication and hard work to Crescens Lodge and the Grand Lodge while he lived here in Indiana.  It was a fun night and all three recipients were very surprised!

Submitted by SR Dennis Adams, Secretary of Crescens Lodge #33

DISTRICT IV PICNIC

The annual District IV picnic on Sunday July 24th was hosted by PGC Chad Hartley at his home in Yorktown.  In addition to those who attended from the district, there were several visitors - GC Steven Breedlove and Cassie, GC Stephanie McKee, PGC Patty Breedlove, and GVC Michael Deaton and Beverly, for a total of 31.  Some probably did not attend due to the possibility of rain, but it did not rain on the festivities.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious selection of homemade treats, and enjoyed the time spent in Pythian fellowship.

Expression of thanks from Grand Chancellor Chad Hartley

Never before, have I really understood what the order of the Knights of Pythias meant.  I thought I did.

On March 19, 2011, I lost my wife. Roni, who was the light of my life and as such was nearly extinguished.

I say, nearly, because all of my friends in the Pythian order came to me with candles of kindness and hope and helped keep my light from being extinguished.  Everyone of my Brothers and Sisters in little and large ways kept me continuing when I wanted to quit and not care anymore.  I can’t express enough how much each and every one of you mean to me.  Roni’s Pythian services were very well done, and there were so many Sisters and Brothers there that I truly knew at that moment what she meant to you all and what it means to be a Pythian.  Now I truly know what it means.

DISTRICT IV NEWS

1st FAMILY OUTING HUGE SUCCESS!!  Even the Daytona 500 couldn't keep the Pythians from east central Indiana from gathering for their all new "Family Fun Day".  This idea is the brain-child of several in the district and is planned to be a monthly event.  The first one was very successful as some 23 gathered at the Sirloin Stockade in Muncie and had a grand 'ole time of food and fellowship!  It is hoped that these will only grow as the word spreads!                                                                           Submitted by SR Dennis Adams, Crescens #33

Pop-tab report

While the winter has been very cold here in Indiana, the Tab project has been sizzling hot!  Today (January 10) I recycled the first load of tabs for 2011, 258 lbs!  I stopped by one of my big tab schools and filled almost half of the totes I used earlier to transport tabs to the recycler!  I still have two totes from two other schools to complete.

So where are we number wise?  The cumulative total: 23,544,568    2010-2011 y-t-d: 1,304,040

The total poundage of tabs recycled to date is nearly 9 tons!!!  17,949 lbs. since 2000.  This has resulted in donations to the Indianapolis Ronald McDonald House of $8,882 since 2000.  This work is something all Knights and Sisters should take pride in.

With the Lafayette Lodge #51 Tab Project, this level of activity means that the Lodge has donated over $8,000 to local schools since 2000.  The Lafayette Lodge Brothers should be especially proud of this accomplishment.

Fraternally,
Ken Moder

Greetings from the Grand Chancellor

To all Brothers and Sister,

Hanukah is just past, Christmas is fast approaching and the New Year after that, and as they do I hope that you are well.  I would like to thank those who have sent my family Christmas cards.  Roni has them on a trellis and they are very nice. I am sure that you are all busy with the coming holidays.  We have been busy cooking candy, fudge and all of the goodies that make us gain extra pounds.  I think I need to have a New Year's resolution to lose weight.  Another one I wish to make is to recruit a new member next year.  If each of us does the same thing and keeps our resolution, then we can double our membership.  It's certainly worth trying.

Please remember those who aren't able to celebrate this year with their families for one reason or another. Especially our service members who are deployed.  Because of them, we continue to celebrate the holidays we chose to celebrate, be it Christmas, Hanukah, or what ever.

Peace be with you,

Chad Hartley

Grand Chancellor

Merry Christmas

and a

Happy and Prosperous New Year

Crescens Lodge #33, New Castle, kicked off their 21st Annual Holiday Festival on Saturday and Sunday October 16th and 17th.  The weather was perfect during the two day event.  Saturday started with a Pork Chop Barb-B-Q lunch and the Fall Bazaar with several vendors participating.  On Sunday morning, a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausage, biscuits & gravy was enjoyed by many, and lunch featured a Chili Cook-off which was won by Christy Davidson of Sulphur Springs.  Rod Gardner, GIG, Welcome Lodge #37, tied for third place, and David Cook, Crescens Lodge #33, placed fifth.  Every last spoonful of the chili was quickly consumed by the crowd assembled for the second day of the Bazaar and the 4th Annual Car Show.  There were 97 cars registered for the show.  It was a successful weekend, and $1,000.00 was raised for the New Castle Firefighter's Children Christmas Fund.  More information is available at www.knightsofpythiasofnewcastle.com.

Fred died September 18th at age 66.

Words from the Grand Chancellor

The Grand Council meeting on September 18th was very successful.  Afterwards we took part in a three rank in one day event.  Five new members were initiated.  Two were from Morocco #492, one each from Ashley #394, Brownstown #60 and Welcome #37.  Keep up the good work.  The membership committee, headed by Brother Chris Breedlove, is hard at work thinking of new ideas for the order.  One of which is to give $15 to the Lodge of the top line signer of a candidate.  The name of the new member must be submitted to the Grand Lodge office after the candidate has been knighted.  Remember, if you haven’t already done so, I want each lodge to create a membership committee to work with my membership committee.  I know that many of the lodges have yet to have an official visit but this is something that I want done as soon as possible.

Welcome to the five newest Knights in Indiana

Crescens Lodge #33 hosted a very well attended Three Rank Day at 12:00 Noon on September 18th.  There were more than 20 Knights in attendance, plus the five candidates.  Eight Lodges were represented – Crescens #33, Welcome #37, Brownstown #60, Frankton #315, Lizton #342, Ashley #394, Orestes #471 and Morocco #492.  It was an honor to also have the Supreme Prelate, Keith Stooksberry, from Ohio to participate in the ceremonies of the Ranks.  The newest members in the Domain of Indiana are DeWayne Richmond of Welcome #37, Lenard Hoener of Brownstown #60, Josh DePew of Ashley #394, Chris Kosary and Bill Warne of Morocco #492.  The rank work was followed by a pitch-in dinner with Crescens Lodge furnishing the main course and the drinks.  It was another great day of Pythian fellowship.

FROM THE SUPREME PRELATE

August 25, 2010

To: All Subordinate Lodges
Subject: Pythian Day of Divine Worship

Dear Brothers,

The upcoming weekend of September 10-12, 2010, has been designated as the second Sabbath of September, in which the Pythian Day of Divine Worship has been established. Subordinate Lodges are requested to attend divine services in a body. Services may be conducted in a Pythian Hall or other suitable location, or the members may attend services of their individual faiths in their Houses of Worship.

It is at this time that we, the Knights of Pythias, now come together and put into our Prayers, the names and memories of those who need us the most. As a Benevolent organization, let us show our communities through deeds of caring and concern, by conducting services open to the public or by attending services together as a lodge. Remember to include our fellow Brothers and Sisters, their families and loved ones in your prayers.  Also, please include members of our Military and their families.

We ask the Supreme Ruler of the Universe to Bless us and Keep us, as we the Pythian Order, work together in the Spirit of Friendship and Love, to make our world a better place for all. We ask this in your name.   Amen

Fraternally,

L. Keith Stooksberry, Jr.
Supreme Prelate

Message from the Grand Chancellor

Brothers and Sisters,

Another session of Grand Lodge has come and gone and we all had a great time.  It is a great honor that you elected me to serve the next year as Grand Chancellor. I wish to thank Junior Past Grand Chancellor Tim Loughmiller and Sitting Past Grand Chief Roni Hartley for a great year.  I wish for Grand Chief Shirley Moore a great year to come.  In fact, I wish everyone a great year.  It is my hope that we have a successful year with a net increase in membership.  Work hard and do your best.  If there is anything that Grand Lodge can do to help, please don’t hesitate to ask.

RECEPTION FOR INCOMING GRAND CHANCELLOR

Pythians from all over Indiana met at the Castle Hall of Welcome Lodge #37 in Muncie on Saturday, July 24th, for a reception for our new Grand Chancellor Chad Hartley.  The day opened with a delicious meal prepared by the membership of Welcome Lodge #37.  A standing room only crowd jammed the lodge room as PSR Ron Murphy welcomed the crowd.  Two banners were presented and will be hung in the lodge room.  The first was a new banner that lists all of the Past Grand Chancellors from Welcome Lodge.  The second was the traditional banner that the lodge has made for their Grand Chancellors and had GC Hartley's name and his motto "Be THE Better Pythian" on it.  GC Hartley opened some gifts and gave a brief talk.  It was a great time of Pythian Fellowship in Friendship and Love.

Crescens Lodge #33 held its annual lodge picnic at the home of Denny and Maridene Adams on Tuesday, July 20thA pesky thunderstorm that forced festivities inside could not the dampen spirits of the 46 attendees.  A awesome pitch-in meal was enjoyed and fellowship abounded!  The evening was started off with some swimming in the Adams' pool and was capped off with the celebration of the Lodge's "Volunteer of the Year" award.  Brother Jameson McGrew was named the 7th Annual recipient and was presented with a plaque.  His wife, Janet, was presented with a corsage from the Lodge.  In a surprise, Venus Temple #50, Pythian Sisters, presented their inaugural "Volunteer of the Year" award to Sister Verronica Hartley.  Grand Chancellor Chad was given a boutonničre.  It was certainly a great evening that was shared by Brothers, Sisters and guests from all over central and northern Indiana!

Did you know?

On July 4, 1848, the cornerstone for the Washington Monument was laid but the monument was not finished until December 6, 1884.  When finished, it was the tallest manmade structure in the world at 555 feet, 5 and Ľ inches tall.

It was topped by a cast aluminum pyramidal cap weighing a little over 6 pounds.  Aluminum was new at the time and was about the same price as silver.  On the East side of the cap facing the Capitol Building, two Latin words "Laus Deo" are inscribed.  Translated to English they mean "Praise be to God".  Those words can not be seen from the ground, and they were placed there two decades before the invention of the airplane.

Jesse Edwards, Sophomore from Winchester High School, captured first place in the Knights of Pythias State Poster Contest about "Volunteerism".  Jesse made a poster that depicted himself delivering groceries to shut-ins.  It was pretty neat to see the poster artist in the poster itself!  Jesse was presented the winners certificate and a $500 check by Grand Chancellor Tim Loughmiller.  Tim and his wife, PGC Lori, were present at Crescens Lodge #33 for a celebration along with Jesse's Mother and Brother.  Also present were long time friend of the contest and Crescens Lodge, art instructor Dale Hardacre of Winchester High School and his wife.  Indiana will be well represented in the Supreme contest.  Jesse's sister placed 2nd in the Supreme contest two years ago.

From the Grand Chancellor

As I write this letter to the PSN for the last time as the Grand Chancellor of Indiana, I believe the last year has been a good one, a year that has been both an enjoyable and a productive one overall.  It really seems to have gone quickly, but I believe we as an Order have made strides in areas such as membership and support of a wide variety of different charities and worthwhile organizations.  I know that I can say that I have received an immense amount of satisfaction in being able to travel the state and meet with many Brothers and Sisters, and I have appreciated the help and support I have received from so many.  Successes of this past year have been a result of the hard work of many Pythians, and I thank all of you who have contributed in any way to helping me to get through this past year.

I would like to encourage all those who are qualified to do so to consider attending our upcoming Grand Lodge Convention.  Our numbers at Grand Lodge in recent years have been on a downward trend, and we need Brothers who are eligible to become involved in the important work of conducting the business of Grand Lodge.  I would also like to extend a special invitation to those who have not taken their Grand Lodge rank but are eligible to do so to attend the Grand Lodge Convention on either Friday or Saturday to take their rank and become a part of our state organization.  Get involved - you will find it challenging but rewarding.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate Grand Chief Verronica Hartley on a job well done this year.  It has been a genuine pleasure to work with Grand Chief Roni, and her quiet courage in the face of some trying health problems has been an inspiration to us all.  Best of luck to you and your fellow Sisters in having a successful Convention this year.

I look forward to seeing as many of my Pythian Brothers and Sisters as possible at Grand Lodge this year.  God bless.

Fraternally,

Tim Loughmiller, Grand Chancellor

I asked the Ronald McDonald House Coordinator for a list of the Top Ten Donors of Tabs within the State.  The results showed the Knights in second place with 22 million, and the Knights of Columbus in first place with over 35 million.  I think both the Knights and Sisters need to know that they are making a major impact.

More on July 4th

The last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence signed by 56 of the best men from each colony on July 4, 1776 states:  "For the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor".  All the names were kept secret for six months because King George III had denounced all American rebels as traitors and the punishment for treason was hanging.  All 56 signers were well educated men of means and knew they were risking everything.  Few survived very long.  Five were captured by the British and were tortured before they died.  Twelve had their homes sacked, looted, burned or occupied by the British.  Two lost their sons in the army.  One had two sons captured.  Nine of the 56 died in the war.  All had learned that liberty is so much more important than security.  They pledged "their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor" and they fulfilled that pledge and paid the price for our liberty.
